Mandy is a young protester camping at Kengal Rock near the Gondiwindis’ property in the hope of stopping the mine’s construction. Though August struggles to understand Mandy’s motives and methods, she appreciates the other woman trying to save her family’s land. Mandy believes that the majority of people will not care about ecological causes unless someone convinces them that humanity’s fate is intertwined with their environment.

Quotes
“And then we’re all migrants here, even those first-fleet descendants; we forget we’re all in someone else’s country. And too often we don’t have the vision, the respect, to bother learning the native language! To even learn to respect the culture where we live.”
“Because it doesn’t make life easier?” August asked.
“Because we have to learn it’s personal—we learn that through looking after the land. That we’ll all continue not really having a collective identity unless we take a long and hard look back and accept the past and try to save the land we live on…that’s what I think.”

Explanation and Analysis:
Chained to Rinepalm’s fence in protest, Mandy encourages August to conceal her face from the police. Mandy believes that the only way to convince more of the general public to join their cause is to develop a sense of “collective identity” separate from demographic categories like race and class. She notes that “we’re all migrants here, even those first-fleet descendants,” referencing the original settlers who arrived in Australia from Europe centuries ago. But Mandy suggests that such people have forgotten “to respect the culture where we live” by “learning the native language” or acting responsibly toward shared resources.
