To Kill a Mockingbird
by Harper Lee

Zeebo is Calpurnia’s adult son and a member of the Black community in Maycomb. He works as the town’s garbage collector and is also involved in leading music at church, guiding the congregation in call-and-response hymns. When Scout and Jem visit Calpurnia’s church, Zeebo is one of the first people to welcome them warmly, reassuring them that they belong there despite Lula’s objections. Zeebo’s kindness and hospitality helps to counter Scout’s earlier assumptions about difference and shows how human dignity can be respected across racial lines.

Zeebo’s role in the novel is small but meaningful. He represents the close-knit Black community in Maycomb and demonstrates literacy, leadership, and generosity—qualities that challenge the racist assumptions held by many White characters in the novel.
