Tom Lake
by Ann Patchett
Charlie is a Broadway casting director who is impressed by Lara’s audition for Our Town. Although he can’t offer her the role because his coworkers prefer a more established actress, Charlie asks Lara to meet him at a bar to discuss her career. There, he tells her about Tom Lake’s production of Our Town and offers to refer her for the role of Emily there. Lara, recognizing the cliché of an older man in the industry asking an up-and-coming young actress to meet with him alone, assumes that he is propositioning her. When she flirts with him, however, he grows flustered and turns her down. Lara finds out that Bill Ripley called Charlie and told him that she was his niece in an effort to protect her.
