Tyres

by Adam Thorpe
The Maquis were bands of guerilla resistance fighters during the Nazi occupation of Vichy France. They organized in rural areas against the Nazi regime. They were typically made up of young men who avoided the Service du travail obligatoire by escaping into the woods or mountains. The original term “maquis” comes from the kind of terrain the groups hid in, characterized by high ground and thicket.
