Tally’s father. Sol is a middle pretty who, most of the time, exudes wisdom and competence, and he insists that it’s important for individuals to think only about themselves and doing what’s right—Tally’s desire to protect Shay is, in his mind, immature and silly. Later, as Tally learns more about pretty surgery, she begins to understand that both of her parents probably behave the way they do because that’s how they’re programmed to think: the brain lesions caused by the operation make them incurious and accepting of whatever the government says is correct.
