Late in the novel, Willa, thinking of Dusty, reflects on the ways in which advice on how to care for babies has changed since she was a new mother. In doing so, she uses hyperbole to exaggerate both ends of the spectrum:

Willa as a young mother had been ordered to sterilize everything within a hundred yards of baby, hold back on solids, and avoid potential allergens, ideally until voting age. And now the doctors said: bring on the peanut butter. Put the babies on the, floor let them eat dog hair.
