Explanation and Analysis:

Watership Down is set in the English countryside, albeit from a non-human perspective. What might be an idyllic, pastoral setting in a novel featuring human characters becomes a harsh landscape with horrors around every corner for the vulnerable rabbit protagonists. The rabbits live their lives as if every day might be their last. Every shifting leaf, every gust of wind, every sound, every dark shadow in their proximity could signal danger. Enemies lurk behind almost every corner, even amongst the ranks of rabbits that Hazel and his group should be able to trust.
