It takes the Dreamer a while to realize that his feelings of sadness are linked to his loneliness because he is so used to being alone. The dust and cobwebs in his rooms attest not just to his isolation (he clearly doesn’t get visitors) but also how stuck he himself has become. He doesn’t move enough (emotionally, that is—readers already know how restlessly he prowls the city streets) to keep the dust from settling over his life.
