Explanation and Analysis:

White Noise features such a dizzying amount of detail, characters, subplots, and variations in tone that the mood of the book is consistently overwhelming. This is in line with an important concept in the theory of postmodernism known as "hysterical consciousness," referring to novels that overload the reader with information to reflect the scattered, intense nature of contemporary life. (The term was first coined by the critic James Wood.)
