Avaric Character Analysis

The Gillikinese Avaric, who later becomes Margreave of Tenmeadows, attends Briscoe College at Shiz with Boq. Described as handsome, arrogant, and effortlessly cool, he breezes easily through Oz’s elite circles. At Shiz, he and Elphaba are mild frenemies, and after his graduation, he rises to prominence in Ozian society. Toward the end of the novel, Elphaba attends a dinner party at his house, where she dishonestly claims to have killed Madame Morrible—a revelation met with indifference by Avaric and his wealthy guests. Their conversation turns to the nature of evil, which they engage with only superficially, before Elphaba leaves.
