Boq, a Munchkinlander, is Elphaba’s first real friend at Shiz University. However, they initially meet as toddlers at Gawnette’s daycare. He’s polite, earnest, and eager to impress, and his social circle at Shiz includes Avaric, whose arrogance he tolerates because they’re friends. He develops an unrequited crush on Galinda, whose attention he never truly wins, though they do share one kiss. His friendship with Elphaba begins when he asks for her help getting Galinda to speak to him, and it evolves as he helps Elphaba with her research for Doctor Dillamond on the origins of Animals and animals. Their shared respect for Doctor Dillamond and their belief in Animal rights bonds them together, and though they go many years without speaking after Shiz, their connection lasts until Elphaba dies. Often caught between more forceful personalities, Boq tends to follow rather than lead, though he remains generally good-natured and dependable. He ultimately marries Milla, one of Glinda’s friends from Shiz, and goes on to work in Munchkinland’s agricultural sphere.
