Princess Nastoya Character Analysis

Princess Nastoya is the leader of the Scrow tribe in the Vinkus. She reveals her true form—an Elephant—to Elphaba, explaining that she was once cursed to appear as a human woman. In light of the Wizard’s escalating oppression of Animals, she now sees the curse as a blessing that has kept her alive. Nastoya urges Elphaba to take control of her own fate, suggesting she embrace the title of Witch as a form of protection, much as Nastoya hides behind her human guise. Before parting, she gifts Elphaba three crows, instructing her to use them to summon help if she should need it.
