Wicked

by Gregory Maguire
The Lion travels with Dorothy, the Tin Woodman, and the Scarecrow in hopes of gaining courage from the Wizard. Elphaba believes he is the same Lion cub that Dr. Nikidik once tried to use as a test subject in a Shiz University lecture, an experiment she had criticized at the time. That memory softens her toward him—at least initially—though she never confirms whether he is indeed the same being.
