The Unnamed God Character Analysis

The Unnamed God is the central deity of Unionism, a monotheistic, morally absolutist religion dominant throughout most of Oz (with some similarities to modern-day Christianity). Frex, Elphaba and Nessa’s father, is a devout Unionist minister, raising his daughters under its doctrine. Nessa adopts this faith zealously, while Elphaba resists it. The Unnamed God’s religion largely functions as a tool for political control—especially within the Wizard’s regime—and contrasts with freer, older faiths, like Lurlinism.
