Wives and Daughters: Chapter 57 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Townspeople come to the Gibsons’ house to congratulate Cynthia on her engagement. Even Lady Cumnor visits. During that visit, Lady Cumnor lectures Cynthia and says she hopes her past misconduct will prove to be only youthful trivialities. Before Lady Cumnor leaves, she also says that Lord Hollingford is having a gathering at the house soon. He invited Roger, but Roger declined. Lady Cumnor would like Mr. Gibson to intervene and see if he can coax Roger into coming to the gathering.
Lady Cumnor’s somewhat harsh words show her tendency to speak her mind. That also reflects the privileges that come with Lady Cumnor’s status, as it seems unlikely that other people without as much power would feel as entitled as she does to share their critical opinions. Notably, Lady Cumnor’s comments also suggest that while people in town have chosen to overlook Cynthia’s supposed errors, they have not forgotten the false rumors that spread about her, and some people still seem to believe them, underlining once more the harmful nature of such rumors.

As the Gibson family prepares to travel to London for Cynthia’s wedding, Molly comes down with a cold. Mr. Gibson advises her against traveling, so Molly plans to stay behind. The day before the family is set to leave, Lady Harriet visits the house with gifts from the Cumnors for Cynthia for her engagement. Seeing that Molly is ill and won’t be going to the wedding, Harriet invites her to stay at Cumnor Towers while her family is gone. Molly thinks she will be a bother and doesn’t want to go, but Clare thinks it’s a good idea, so Molly ends up accepting the invitation. The next day, Molly goes to Cumnor Towers. At first, she feels out of place, but Harriet dotes on her, and Lady Cumnor greets her warmly. Before Molly realizes it, she is enjoying herself.
