William Wordsworth's 1819 poem "To a Snowdrop" addresses a hardy little flower that blooms towards the end of winter and whose presence signals that spring is on its way. Popping up while snow still coats the ground, the snowdrop becomes a symbol of humble strength in the face of hardship and of hope for brighter days to come. At the same time, the snowdrop's brief appearance reminds the speaker that yet another year has passed. Nature's predictable cycles are thus both comforting and a bit sad, and "To a Snowdrop" ultimately praises nature's persistence while also acknowledging that beauty and life are fleeting.
