Barbara and her mother begin fighting almost immediately upon Barbara’s arrival. One of the things they spar about is Barbara’s choice to move to Colorado and leave her parents’ home in Pawhuska. Violet attempts to make Barbara feel badly about her choice to leave Oklahoma, and takes a low blow at her daughter as she invokes the missing Beverly and his disappointment in Barbara’s life choices.
