These are the final words that General Leyers says to Pino before departing with the American soldiers at the Austrian border. Importantly, “Observer” is Pino’s undercover spy name, given to him by his uncle. The fact that Leyers knows the codename renders many of the events in the second half of the novel ambiguous. There are many important questions that the novel refuses to answer. For instance, why didn’t Leyers turn Pino in if he knew the truth? How long did he know the truth? Was Leyers working for the Allies all along? If so, was he only doing so…
