Eddie is recuperating at the hospital after being badly beaten by Henry Bowers and having his arm broken. His mother, Sonia, has been causing a commotion at the hospital, due to her over-reaction to Eddie’s condition.
Eddie begins to realize that his waking nightmare about the leper (an incarnation of It) is largely the result of his relationship with his mother. The leper evokes his fears of illness—imposed by his mother—and the leper’s sexual overtures are related to Sonia’s wish for Eddie to remain her permanent companion, taking on a role similar to that of a husband.
