Niccolò Ammaniti

About the Author

Ammaniti grew up during a turbulent era in Italy, marked by political unrest and social change. Raised in a household that valued intellectual pursuits, Ammaniti developed an early passion for storytelling while also nurturing an interest in the natural sciences. He initially studied biology at the University of Rome, but his growing fascination with literature soon took precedence. Abandoning his studies, he turned to writing, drawing from his childhood experiences and the socio-political atmosphere of his youth. His early work, Branchie (1994), showcased his unique style, which blended humor with dark themes. After Branchie, Ammaniti achieved international fame with I’m Not Scared (2001), a novel that explores the loss of innocence against a backdrop of rural crime, reflecting the darker societal elements he witnessed growing up. The book’s success, along with other works like Steal You Away and the Premio Strega-winning As God Commands, solidified his reputation as a leading figure in contemporary Italian literature. Known for his psychological insight and exploration of moral dilemmas, Ammaniti continues to be a versatile storyteller and has recently ventured into writing for television with his series The Miracle (2018).
