Fergus Kilpatrick
In “Theme of the Traitor and the Hero,” Ryan is the great-grandson of Fergus Kilpatrick, an Irish revolutionary. When Ryan discovers that Kilpatrick staged his own death in order to act as a martyr for the cause, Ryan decides to never reveal this secret, thus preserving the memory of his great-grandfather’s cause.

In “Theme of the Traitor and the Hero,” a man named Ryan researches and writes a biography of his grandfather Fergus Kilpatrick, who was an Irish revolutionary. However, in researching, Ryan finds out that Fergus had betrayed his cause. When his comrade Nolan finds out, he and Fergus agree that they will stage a public murder of Fergus that will function as punishment/redemption for Fergus and allow the cause to gain a martyr. As Ryan researches, he finds references to Shakespeare plays peppering the last days of Fergus’s life, which he assumes were left by Nolan for someone in the Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut.
