Hunting by Stars: Chapter 4 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Back at the resistance camp, Rose regrets not leaving on her own to look for Frenchie. She, Wab, Chi Boy, and Derrick are attending a Council meeting with Bullet, Frenchie’s dad, and other leaders. Father Carole, who works at the residential schools and spies for the resistance, reports that eight people have been captured this past week, but he doesn’t know if Frenchie is one of them. Four were sent to two regional schools, while the other four never made it there. Rose demands they split up and investigate the schools, leading Bullet to dismiss her for interrupting. Furious, Rose begins gathering supplies. Knowing she intends to set out on her own, Derrick insists on coming along.
Rose continues her impatient insistence that the group put all their efforts into finding Frenchie. Watching her elders delay action until they know Frenchie’s location for sure seems unacceptable to Rose, though they are only trying to keep others from getting captured. That Derrick knows Rose is planning her own rescue mission shows he pays attention to her and is familiar with her willful personality. Rose’s choice to strike out on her own without telling anyone else shows that she has had to cultivate confidence in herself and make her own choices, suggesting she hasn’t always had a loving and supportive community to help guide her.
