Lord Cai
Lord Montagov is Alisa and Roma’s father, Lady Montagova’s husband, and Dimitri and Benedikt’s uncle. He is also the leader of the White Flower Gang. He is portrayed as someone who resorts to violence to try and solve most of his problems, and he actively takes part in the law of retaliation that has led the Scarlet and White Flower Gangs to engage in bitter warfare with no end in sight.

As Roma investigates the monster and the madness-inducing contagion, Lord Montagov tells him that he wants nothing to do with the investigation, and Roma believes it’s because his father is afraid. Roma’s description of the difference between strength and power is telling. Later, the novel will reveal that Qi Ren is the monster. The novel also makes clear that Qi Ren holds relatively little social or political power. Moreover, he did not have the power to choose whether to become the monster or not. After kissing Roma the night before, Juliette travels into White Flower Gang territory to demand an explanation from Roma about why he betrayed her and her family four years prior by taking part in the bombing of the Scarlet Gang’s servants’ quarters. Roma’s comments point to how Juliette felt about Roma before he participated in the bombing of the Scarlet Gang. Namely, at that point, Juliette saw Roma as caring, merciful, thoughtful, and kind, and she never would have thought him capable of being complicit in the murder of several people. When Juliette demands to know how Roma became involved with the bombing of the Scarlet Gang’s servants’ quarters, she thinks back to the hopes she and Roma had before the bombing. This passage points to the idea that Roma and Juliette are so-called star-crossed lovers. Star-crossed lovers are those whose relationship seems doomed from the beginning due to forces outside of their control. Those forces could be fate, societal pressures, or other factors outside of their control. The phrase originally comes from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, on which the novel is loosely based. Notably, this passage begins by pointing out that Juliette is tired of the “hatred and blood and vengeance.” That points to the toll that the blood feud between the Scarlet and White Flower Gangs takes on those who participate in it.
