After Dr. Samodurov leaves, Jonas and Janina eventually begin to heal. Lina is also given new hope that Kostas might be alive, after the doctor tells her that he theorizes Ivanov might have been lying to Elena for sport. Lina then sees a sliver of sunlight on the horizon: the end of the polar night is in sight. They have survived the winter.
