After Mattie, LaBoeuf, and Rooster set out for the final leg of their journey, they stop for a moment so that Captain Boots Finch can catch up with them. After Captain Finch gives Rooster some news, he asks if LaBoeuf is the one who shot Lucky Ned Pepper’s horse, and Rooster jumps in, making fun of LaBoeuf for missing the outlaw. Captain Finch then points out that Rooster himself has missed Ned on a number of occasions, so Rooster decides to try to prove himself by throwing a “corn dodger” into the air and shooting at it.
