It is Thanksgiving and, as part of their family tradition, the Pattillos are donating cherished items to charity to show their gratitude. When Grandma India asks Conrad to give up his toy engine, Conrad balks at the suggestion, so Grandma India uses Melba as an example, since Melba is giving up a favorite article of clothing.
