Earth Symbol Analysis

Earth Symbol Icon
Earth Symbol Icon

Earth represents both humanity’s past and future, illustrating humans’ self-destructive capacity while also presenting hope for the future and showing how humans remain drawn toward home. The novel begins in what seems to be the aftermath of a nuclear war, with only a few humans like Lilith surviving to be taken by the Oankali into their ship. The destruction of the planet shows humanity’s violent tendencies, particularly what happens when humans turn against each other. Lilith experiences this violence firsthand when people like Paul and Jean attempt to attack her. But when the Oankali deem humans unsuitable to care for themselves, taking a paternalistic attitude toward raising a new generation of humans to resettle Earth, the novel raises the question of whether or not such a “solution” really solves humanity’s problems.

In the end, in spite of the self-destructive flaws of humanity that led to Earth’s destruction, Lilith and other humans remain drawn back toward Earth all the same. Lilith struggles to relate to people like Fukumoto who choose to live on the alien ship, and she notices how isolation from Earth and fellow humans seems to drive some people like Paul Titus nearly mad. Unlike humans, the Oankali have no deep attachment to their home planet, with Jdahya even claiming not to know whether their home planet still exists. The Oankali either don’t understand or don’t care about humans’ attachment to their home, which culminates in Lilith being prevented from returning to Earth, even though she was promised that she could. This denial hardens Lilith’s resolve, as she ends the novel determined to make sure human life can once again thrive on Earth. In Dawn, Earth’s fate connects with the fate of humanity itself—though the destroyed Earth shows humanity’s self-destructive qualities, the revived Earth offers hope for the future and a chance for humans to renew themselves and start again.

Explanation and Analysis:
This quote comes shortly after Lilith meets Jdahya, one of the Oankali aliens who has been watching Lilith the whole time in her isolation room that she always finds herself in after she Awakens. At first, Jdahya looks similar enough to a human that Lilith mistakes him for a tall, old man. But the more time that Lilith spends with Jdahya, the more that she realizes how alien he is, not just in his appearance but also in his attitudes and beliefs. In this passage, for instance, Lilith draws attention to Jdahya’s apparent disregard for humans as social creatures when Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Book 1, Chapter 5 Quotes

“You said we had two incompatible characteristics. What were they?”

Jdahya made a rustling noise that could have been a sigh, but that did not seem to come from his mouth or throat. “You are intelligent,” he said. “That’s the newer of the two characteristics, and the one you might have put to work to save yourselves. You are potentially one of the most intelligent species we’ve found, though your focus is different from ours. Still, you had a good start in the life sciences, and even in genetics.”

“What’s the second characteristic?”

“You are hierarchical. That’s the older and more entrenched characteristic.”

Explanation and Analysis:
In this quote, Jdahya talks about what he and the other Oankali see as the fatal flaws of humanity—the same flaws that led humans to almost destroy themselves in a nuclear war that made Earth uninhabitable. According to Jdahya, the problem with humans is that they are both “intelligent” and “hierarchical.” The implication is that the complex “hierarchical” structures that humans create with their  intelligence (such as governments) are what lead to violence and self-destruction within the species. The narration often portrays the beliefs of the Oankali in ambiguous or even negative ways. Still, Jdahya’s criticisms of human social structures Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Explanation and Analysis:
This passage comes near the end of Lilith’s meeting with Paul Titus, who is only the second other human (after Sharad) that she’s seen since the destruction of the planet Earth. At first, Lilith and Paul bond over the unusual situation they’re in, and Paul tries to give Lilith advice based on his own experiences. But things take a turn near the end of their conversation, when Lilith learns that Paul has given birth to something like 70 children but has no memory of having sex. Book 3, Chapter 1 Quotes

The food, she had been told, would be replaced as it was used—replaced by the ship itself which drew on its own substance to make print reconstructions of whatever each cabinet had been taught to produce.

The long wall opposite the bathrooms concealed eighty sleeping human beings—healthy, under fifty, English-speaking, and frighteningly ignorant of what was in store for them.

Explanation and Analysis:
This quote comes from near the beginning of the third book of the novel, and it draws attention to how significantly Lilith’s position has changed from where she was at the start of the novel. While Lilith began disoriented and at the mercy of captors she didn’t understand, now she is the one with the power to Awaken people, giving them an experience that is akin to coming back from the dead. Lilith is fully aware of the power she wields. She notes that the people in their suspended animation are “frighteningly ignorant” of what the future has in store Dolorem et quae. Book 3, Chapter 2 Quotes

Lilith hesitated. “Are you believing?”

Tate looked up at her, seemed to smile a little. “How can I?”

Lilith nodded. “Yeah. But you’ll have to sooner or later, of course, and I’m supposed to do what I can to prepare you. The Oankali are ugly. Grotesque. But we can get used to them, and they won’t hurt us. Remember that. Maybe it will help when the time comes.”

Related Characters: Tate Marah (speaker), Lilith Iyapo (speaker)

Explanation and Analysis:
This quote comes from one of Lilith’s early conversations with Tate Marah, the first human that Lilith Awakens after the Oankali grant her to power to do so and task her with forming a group of humans to resettle Earth. On a superficial level, Tate is different from Lilith in many ways, having been a wealthy White woman back on Earth while Lilith is Black. Despite their differences, though, Lilith senses that Tate both understand her. She also sees value in Tate’s different perspective, which could potentially help her as a leader. Lilith’s description of the Oankali to Tate shows Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Ad dolor at. Quia aperiam eligendi. Ut veniam voluptatem. Book 3, Chapter 3 Quotes

“Anthropology,” Tate said disparagingly. “Why did you want to snoop through other people’s cultures? Couldn’t you find what you wanted in your own?”

Lilith smiled and noticed that Tate frowned as though this were the beginning of a wrong answer. “I started out wanting to do exactly that,” Lilith said. “Snoop. Seek. It seemed to me that my culture—ours—was running headlong over a cliff. And, of course, as it turned out, it was. I thought there must be saner ways of life.”

“Find any?”

“Didn’t have much of a chance. It wouldn’t have mattered much anyway. It was the cultures of the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. that counted.”

Explanation and Analysis:
In this quote, Tate and Lilith discuss their pasts on Earth. After Lilith describes her past work in anthropology, Tate asks Lilith if she studied anthropology in order to “snoop” through the cultures of other groups of people. Lilith agrees, but she notes that “snoop” could be replaced with “seek,” a more positive word for searching that is often associated with looking for treasure or even spiritual enlightenment. This change of wording highlights Lilith’s belief that anthropology and learning about other cultures has value. The references to the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. reflect the time the novel was published, in Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Ad dolor at. Book 4, Chapter 1 Quotes

Explanation and Analysis:
In this quote, Nikanj describes to Lilith the challenge that she and her humans will have to undergo in order to prove that they are ready to be sent back to Earth and resettle it. Nikanj shows Lilith an area that seems to be a natural landscape but is in fact just a large part of the ship called the training room, where the horizon is just an illusion and actually just a set of walls. Book 4, Chapter 3 Quotes

“And in spite of what we see on what seems to be the other side, I believe we’ll find a wall over there.”

Lilith sighed. “Yes.”

“All because the Oankali said so.”

Explanation and Analysis:
In this quote, Lilith explains to Tate, who has remained one of Lilith’s most trusted advisors even after she Awakened more humans, that even though the training room looks realistic, it is just a room within the ship and not actually a natural environment. Tate expresses doubt about this idea, trusting her own eyes and “the sun, the moon and the stars,” which she can clearly see and which remind her so much of the familiar versions she’s seen on Earth. The novel is full of religious imagery (with the training room being similar to the Biblical Garden of Eden), Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Book 4, Chapter 6 Quotes

“I don’t believe he meant to kill anyone,” Nikanj said. “He was angry and afraid and in pain. Joseph had injured him when he hit you. Then he saw Joseph healing, saw the flesh mending itself before his eyes. He screamed. I’ve never heard a human scream that way. Then he … used his ax.”

Explanation and Analysis:
This quote comes shortly after Lilith gets knocked out by Curt and wakes up in the ooloi camp of the training room, where Nikanj shows her that Joseph has been murdered. As Nikanj explains, Curt was the one who killed Joseph, not in a fight, but when Joseph was already injured and Curt, disturbed by the sight of Joseph’s “flesh mending itself before his eyes,” killed Joseph, apparently in a state of panic. Curt’s killing of Joseph is a culmination of all the hints in the novel that Curt was capable of violence and that he had a grudge against Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Explanation and Analysis:
In this quote, Nikanj reveals to Lilith that during an earlier sexual encounter, it made her pregnant with a child that will be part human (including some of Joseph’s DNA) and part Oankali. Lilith reacts in “speechless” shock, as this passage represents the culmination of a pregnancy fear she’s had since the beginning of the novel when she Awakened with a scar on her stomach. From a human perspective, Nikanj’s surprise pregnancy could be considered a violation similar to rape. But based on Nikanj’s manner when talking to Lilith, it doesn’t seem to even consider that a human might feel Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. She considered resisting, making it drug her and carry her back. But that seemed a pointless gesture. At least she would get another chance with a human group. A chance to teach them … but not a chance to be one of them. Never that. Never?

Another chance to say, “Learn and run!”

She would have more information for them this time. And they would have long, healthy lives ahead of them. Perhaps they could find an answer to what the Oankali had done to them. And perhaps the Oankali were not perfect. A few fertile people might slip through and find one another. Perhaps. Learn and run! If she were lost, others did not have to be. Humanity did not have to be.

She let Nikanj lead her into the dark forest and to one of the concealed dry exits.

Explanation and Analysis:
These are the novel’s closing lines. Nikanj has just informed Lilith that, in addition to being pregnant, she is not allowed to go back to Earth and has to stay to train a new cohort of humans to resettle Earth. This news greatly disappoints Lilith, but instead of acting defeated, she uses the injustice of her situation to motivate herself to keep fighting for the future of humanity. Outwardly, Lilith isn’t disobedient, with the final image of the novel being her following Nikanj into an exit.
