Explanation and Analysis:

Deacon King Kong is an example of a historical fiction novel. Although it was published in 2020, it takes place in the late 1960s, often referencing historical and pop culture events from that time. For example, Soup Lopez is a fan of the show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, and in Chapter 12, the Brooklyn borough president is said to be meeting with Neil Armstrong blocks away from the action of the novel. The novel takes place in the Causeway Housing Projects in South Brooklyn, a majority-Black neighborhood, amid the changing social and political climate of the 1960s.
