Over the next week, the tragic story that Jane made up about Katherine circulates through town, which makes Sheriff Snyder and other men in town even more interested in Katherine. When Jane feels she has recovered from the injuries she sustained when the sheriff whipped her, she goes outside, where she finds Katherine surrounded by potential suitors. After Jane helps Katherine get away from the suitors, they go together to the sheriff’s office. There, Katherine takes advantage of the sheriff’s fondness for her to get him to return Jane’s sickles.
This passage points once more to the restrictive gender norms of the time period, as Jane circulates a story in town about Katherine’s tragic beginnings. In that way, Jane makes Katherine into a so-called “damsel in distress,” which has the desired effect, from Jane’s perspective, of leading men to become more romantically interested in Katherine. That shows how, as a result of those gender norms, men become more interested in women whom they believe they can “rescue” and who they think of as powerless.

Someone then comes into the office and tells Sheriff Snyder that there’s been a breach in the fence at the edge of town. The sheriff rushes out. Alone in the sheriff’s office, Jane and Katherine search for information about the town that might be helpful. Then, Jane hears footsteps approaching, and someone opens the door to the sheriff’s office. Jane thinks they’ve been caught, and there’s no way to escape. She feels immense relief when she sees that the person who opened the door is Jackson.
