The Bite of the Mango

by Mariatu Kamara
When Mariatu relocates to London, she and Yabom stay in Mariama’s apartment. Originally from Sierra Leone, Mariama helps raise the funds for Mariatu’s first prosthetic hands. While Mariama feels somewhat disappointed when Mariatu chooses to leave London for Toronto—especially after the effort she made to arrange for Mariatu’s stay and prosthetics—Mariatu eventually helps her understand that prosthetics don’t suit her lifestyle. Mariama’s generosity is one part of the supportive network that aids Mariatu throughout her journey.
