The Sky So Heavy: Chapter 5 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Fin’s text messages his parents and to Lucy continue to fail to go through. Finally he decides to walk over to Lucy’s house and see if he can find her. When he walks outside, his expectations of finding his familiar world still in place are disappointed: the sky has grown heavy and oppressive, and the air itself feels menacing. Fin reflects on the oddity of being totally without technology and isolated from the broader world. Nevertheless, he trudges off to Lucy’s, but when he gets there, he looks through the windows and can see no signs of life in the whole house. He tries to reassure himself that this must just mean she’s gone off somewhere safe and warm.
In this scene, Fin begins to sense how profoundly the world has changed. His technological isolation forces him to confront his surroundings in a more immediate fashion than he’s accustomed to, and what he sees is deeply concerning. Lucy’s absence is somewhat mysterious, and it likely doesn’t bode well.

Quotes
On his walk, Fin sees that Starvos’s store is still open. He comes home to get money and pick up Max, and together they go back to Starvos’s to get as much food as they can. He advises Max to avoid touching anything on their walk.
Starvos’s store still remaining open at this point is somewhat surprising, given the obvious signs of dire calamity. Locally, it seems, people have not yet been willing to abandon their normal routines.

At the store, Starvos tells them they can only have four cans: he has a responsibility to the community to see his goods distributed evenly, he says. Fin is surprised to find that the price Starvos asks for the cans is exorbitant. Max retaliates by shoplifting some candy bars, which he reveals to Fin after they leave. They laugh about the theft and share the candy.
