The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle: Chapter 6 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Jaggery takes Charlotte to the deck, where the weather is gray; Charlotte, however, is happy to be near Jaggery. She notes that the ship is moving quite slowly, and Jaggery tells her that they’ll move more quickly when the sun breaks through. Jaggery then tracks down Keetch and orders him to bring all hands on deck to move the ship, triggering an elaborate string of orders from Keetch that ultimately don’t seem to speed the ship up very much. Jaggery then sends Charlotte with Hollybrass, who sullenly leads her to Barlow. Hollybrass orders Barlow to bring Charlotte to her trunk.
The contrast between Jaggery’s treatment of Charlotte and of the crew is notable here. Jaggery is quite pleasant to Charlotte, but the way he calls for all hands on deck and forces the crew to carry out arbitrary and useless tasks is clearly an empty show of power over them. His behavior here signifies the class hierarchy on the ship, with the crew well below Charlotte in terms of the respect that they receive from their captain.

Quotes
Charlotte and Barlow go below deck and descend a ladder into a hatch where cargo is stored. Barlow warns Charlotte not to go further down, as that’s where the ship’s jail is. Barlow leads Charlotte to her trunk, and she begins to pull items out of it. As she does so, Barlow tells her not to ignore his earlier warning and points out how Jaggery’s orders to move the ship were just a show of control, but Charlotte disregards him. Barlow lights a candle by the ladder and leaves her alone to go through her things. After a while, Charlotte feels someone watching her. She turns to see a face jutting through the hatch to the lower level. As she screams, the candle goes out.
