Grandma (Fairy Godmother) Character Analysis

Grandma is the mother of Mr. Bailey and the grandmother of Alex and Connor. She also happens to be a fairy from the Land of Stories—and not just any fairy, but the Fairy Godmother. When she was still young, Grandma discovered that she could travel at will between the Land of Stories and the real world and that she could even take others with her. Heartbroken at the painful lives so many children in this world suffered, she sought to ease their pain by telling fairytales both to entertain and to teach them important life lessons. When Mr. Bailey met the future Mrs. Bailey on a trip with his mother, Grandma got scared about losing her son and tried to keep the two apart. But when Mr. Bailey completed the Wishing Spell, she realized how strong his love for Mrs. Bailey was. After Mr. Bailey’s death, Grandma does what she can to help and support Mrs. Bailey, Alex, and Connor. She’s the one who gives the twins the book, The Land of Stories, which turns out to be a portal between the two worlds. Although she’s a fairy and loves her homeland, Grandma is also quite attached to the real world and all its brilliant technologies—especially cars. She reunites with the twins in the fairy realm, at the christening of Cinderella and Chance Charming’s newborn daughter, before helping them to return home to their normal lives.

Chapter 3 Quotes

“Whenever you’re feeling down, on the days you miss your dad the most or when you just wish I were here, all you have to do is open it up and we’ll all be together in spirit, reading along,” Grandma told them. “Now, it’s getting late, and you have school tomorrow. Let’s get ready for bed.”

[…]

Alex took The Land of Stories to bed with her that night. She gently flipped through the old pages, being careful not to tear them.

Seeing all the colorful illustrations of the places and characters again made her feel like she was reading an old scrapbook of sorts. She loved spending time reading about fairy-tale characters more than anything. They had always felt so real and accessible to her. They were the best friends she had ever had.

Chapter 19 Quotes

Froggy was speechless. These two children had done something he had only dreamed about doing for years.

“That’s extraordinary, children,” Froggy said, but his happy expression deflated to a worried one. “But you can’t go home yet.”

“Why not?” Alex asked.

“Yeah,” Connor said. “Why not?”

Froggy was the one who had introduced them to the Wishing Spell in the first place. Why was he saying they couldn’t use it now?

“I promised the Fairy Godmother that I would bring you to her,” Froggy said. “And in exchange, she said that she would turn me back into my human form. Please, you must let me take you to her.”

The twins could tell that he didn’t want to ask this of them but was desperately hoping they would agree.
