The Service du travail obligatoire was a concession under the regulations of Vichy France in which hundreds of thousands of French workers were conscripted to Nazi Germany to perform forced labor for the war effort. It is estimated that over 600,000 French workers were sent to Germany between 1942 and 1944, primarily young to middle-aged men.

This passage details how André managed to exempt Raoul from conscription under the Service du travail obligatoire. The Service du travail obligatoire (or “STO”) was a policy of Vichy France where the Nazi government forced hundreds of thousands of French workers to enlist and be deported to Germany, where they worked as forced laborers. This is the first of many concessions (to both sides) that André makes to protect himself and his son, and moreover their business.
