Careless People
by Sarah Wynn-Williams

Sarah Wynn-Williams Character Analysis

Sarah Wynn-Williams is a former Facebook employee and the author of this memoir, as well as the wife of Tom, the mother of three children (including Sasha and Xanthe), and the sister of Ruthie. In keeping with the memoir’s references to The Great Gatsby, she is in many ways an observer in the story like Gatsby narrator Nick Carraway, as what drives much of her memoir are the decisions of Facebook’s leadership, including founder Mark Zuckerberg and chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. Wynn-Williams is idealistic from a young age, developing a strong sense of self-sufficiency after she survives a shark attack and has to convince her parents that she needs medical attention. Due to this, she starts to work at the UN and at embassies, only to become disillusioned with how slow and difficult change is. Facebook seems to offer Wynn-Williams a chance to make a bigger difference in the world, but the longer she spends at the company, the more she has to make moral compromises, realizing that the people who work there don’t have the same ideals as her—and in fact, seem to have few ideals at all beyond growing the company. Wynn-Williams’s story is about the promise of technology but how people who use powerful new technology for selfish and careless reasons have squandered its potential.

Prologue Quotes

We’re in the middle of an archeological ruin somewhere on the Panamanian coast. It’s me, two guys I work with, clusters of people who are basically naked, and Mark Zuckerberg. Mark is not happy. This is the 2015 Summit of the Americas, an international meeting of world leaders. This particular event is a state dinner that—other than Mark—is supposed to be exclusively heads of state of various countries[…]. I wrangled Mark an invitation because I’ve been trying to convince him that he needs to have relationships with these people.

But somehow we are the only ones at this party.
