Maud Martha

by Gwendolyn Brooks
Along with his wife Marie, Oberto is one of Maud Martha’s and Paul’s neighbors. The owner of a grocery store, he is relatively prosperous and has the money for a three-room apartment and to spoil Marie. He dotes on his dainty, beautiful, and fine-mannered wife, even though she barely cooks or cleans and spends her days living a life of luxurious leisure. Rumors say that she carries on a series of extramarital affairs, too, although even this isn’t enough to bring Oberto down.
