Romanticism was an extremely popular intellectual and artistic movement in early 19th century Europe which glorified individuals, nature, emotion, and medieval history. Emerging as a reaction to the Industrial Revolution, Enlightenment philosophy, and other aspects of modernity, Romanticism was essential in the early development of European nationalism, “inventing” nations out of folk cultures. Romanticism was particularly influential in Germany, both in arts and philosophy and the nascent German unification movement.
