Temple Folk
by Aaliyah Bilal
Danielle is Sister Saundra’s 13-year-old daughter. She has light, “French vanilla” skin, a freckly nose, and reddish-colored hair. Danielle begrudgingly joins her mother and the rest of the Muslim Girls Training class on the trip to Chicago for the Saviour’s Day celebration. Sister Memphis is put in charge of her during the ride, and Danielle shares with her that she does not consider Saundra to be her mother, because she does not believe that Saundra really cares for her or her sister. This revelation sparks a flashback to Sister Memphis’s own difficult past, and Sister Memphis decides to show Danielle some compassion by fixing her hair and giving her a nail file to clean under her nails. But the story implies that later, during a pit stop, Danielle uses the nail file to break into cars in a parking lot. Officer O’Malley starts to accuse Sister Memphis, not even considering Danielle as the potential culprit because of her fair skin. But Sister Memphis is sure she did something wrong and confronts Danielle. Danielle begins to talk back disrespectfully, but Sister Memphis ends up pinching her legs so hard she starts to bleed.
