Explanation and Analysis—The Wrong Mother:

The ending of The Sense of an Ending delivers a powerful instance of situational irony in which the outcome is strikingly at odds with both Tony's and the reader's expectations. For most of the novel, Tony assumes a straightforward story: Veronica and Adrian's relationship in the 1960s must have led to Adrian's suicide, and Veronica's chilly secrecy in the present is explained by her grief. This is the version of events that Tony and the audience are led to believe.
