Finding Audrey: Chapter 42 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
The next week, Audrey, Frank, Linus, and Ollie don’t win the local Land of Conquerors tournament. In fact, they’re badly defeated. Anne is shocked. She had been sure they were headed to the international tournament in Toronto that has a $6 million prize pot. After the loss, though, Anne tries to put a good face on the situation and invites the team out for pizza. Frank says the plan sounds good, and he’s going to call up Ade and see if he can go to the restaurant to help out on the weekends. Anne is surprised and wonders aloud to Chris if Frank has found himself a job. Chris doesn’t hear, though, because he has headphones on and is busy playing Land of Conquerors with Ollie. Anne smiles.
Notably, the team doesn’t win the Land of Conquerors tournament. That loss, though, doesn’t seem to dampen the team’s spirits, reflecting the novel’s idea that the relationships one forms are at the heart of what’s truly important in life. This passage also underlines the novel’s ideas about supporting one’s children rather than criticizing or judging them. In this case, Frank begins to thrive and take more steps to become his most authentic and fully realized self after Chris and Anne stop criticizing him and begin supporting him.

The narrative then switches to the transcript of Audrey’s ongoing film. In the transcript, Audrey directly addresses the camera. She says that she’s learned from this whole process that life has ups and downs, and while there will always be setbacks, as long as one keeps going on an upward trajectory, things will be okay. She then excitedly shows the camera the makeup Anne bought her. She says that Anne is pleased that she can see Audrey’s eyes again, and Audrey says that her eyes represent who she actually is. Audrey thanks whoever might be watching for listening to her and then shuts off the camera.
