The mother of Jackie and Nora and husband of Father, Mother’s main role in the story is despising Gran’s manners and stopping her husband from beating Jackie. When their father won’t speak to her for days afterward, she won’t speak to Nora, appearing to blame her daughter for Father’s violence. This displacement of blame might be what’s influencing Jackie to blame his own misbehavior on others, especially since he and Mother appear to be allies throughout the story. Mother also sends Nora to care for Jackie when he goes for his first Confession.
