How does Polonius die?

New! Understand every line of Hamlet.
Read our modern English translation.

Polonius dies because he is secretly spying on a confrontation between Hamlet and Queen Gertrude. While Hamlet is angrily accusing his mother of betraying his dead father by marrying Claudius, Polonius hides behind a tapestry in Gertrude’s room to listen in. When Gertrude cries out in fear, Polonius also calls for help. Hamlet, believing the hidden figure might be Claudius, impulsively thrusts his sword through the tapestry and kills him.

Afterward, Hamlet realizes he has killed Polonius and calls him a “rash, intruding fool.” The death is sudden and chaotic, showing how Hamlet’s hesitation about avenging his father contrasts with the reckless violence he displays in other moments. Hamlet spends much of the play unable to act decisively against Claudius, yet he kills Polonius almost instantly when he thinks he is being spied upon.

Polonius’s death sets off several major tragedies in the play. Ophelia loses her sanity after her father is killed, and Laertes returns seeking revenge against Hamlet. The murder also deepens the atmosphere of corruption and disorder at Elsinore, where spying, deception, and hidden motives constantly lead to destruction.
