Alice Hindman Character Analysis

A twenty-seven-year-old clerk at Winney’s Dry Goods Store. When Alice was a teenager, she had a passionate love affair with a man named Ned Currie who promised to stay with her forever. Ned eventually moves to Cleveland (and later Chicago) to pursue his career and at first writes Alice almost daily, but soon forgets about her and his life in Winesburg. Alice is crushed and never able to move on from Ned or find meaning in her life without him. She convinces herself that she is one of many people who is destined to “live and die alone.”
