District Collector Character Analysis

The District Collector (or DC) is a newly-appointed public official who arrives in the town of Shahkot late in the novel. Immediately after stepping off the train, he walks right into a crisis involving monkeys from Sampath’s tree. These monkeys have been stealing alcohol and making serious trouble in town, and it’s up to the District Collector to decide which plan should be used to solve this problem. The DC is a nervous man who isn’t always sure what to do. He feels sorry for Sampath when he sees him turning away from the crowds arguing over what to do about the monkeys. Mr. Gupta is the DC’s assistant.
