Pinky Character Analysis

Pinky is Sampath’s teenage sister, and the daughter of Mr. Chawla and Kulfi. She’s a willful, headstrong, dramatic, and romantic young woman who’s determined to make something of her life despite her circumstances. She enjoys dressing in extravagant and eye-catching outfits, but she’s also obsessed with the idea that men in town might be watching her or following her. She has a violent streak as well, unafraid to jab a man with a hairpin when she feels disrespected. While she doesn’t directly interact with Sampath too often, her subplot involves an unusual romance between her and the “Hungry Hop boy,” a young man working at an ice cream van in town. Her affection, anger, and sadness over the Hungry Hop boy might be wildly variable and melodramatic, but her emotions are understandable for a restless teenager in her position. As her brother Sampath garners everyone’s attention, Pinky’s struggle to remain relevant and have a life of her own is compelling, even as her antics become increasingly ridiculous.
