After Mia tells Cricket that Liz has died, Cricket’s Coach drives Mia and Cricket in Mia’s car back to Maine. When they arrive, they meet with a lawyer named Clint. Mia hands Clint Liz’s will, which is written on the back of a menu for the restaurant where Liz worked. The will says that Mia and Cricket will split all of Liz’s assets. Clint also says that Liz had a sizeable life insurance policy. Beyond that, he says that Mia will also become Cricket’s guardian until Cricket turns 18. Mia says that she’ll take time off from Yale and move back to Victory. She writes to several officials at Yale, telling them what has happened. They offer their condolences and assure Mia that she’ll still have a spot at the school when she’s ready to return.
Notably, Coach drives Mia and Cricket back home, illustrating the way that the community of Victory, Maine, bands together to help Mia, Liz, and Cricket in their most difficult moments. In this passage, Mia also learns that she will become Cricket’s legal guardian until Cricket turns 18. As Mia has frequently done in the past, she once more puts her own needs and desires on hold in order to support Cricket, in this case dropping out of Yale so that she can move back home and help raise her sister.
