Mrs. Alexander is a kind neighbor of Christopher’s. He first meets her when he’s asking his neighbors for information about Wellington’s death, and she expresses interest in his life and invites him in for tea, showing an easy willingness to see the world from his point of view. Later, Christopher runs into her and her dog at the corner store. He’s wary of trusting her, but he asks her what she knows about Mr. Shears. Mrs. Alexander realizes that Christopher thinks his mother is dead, and ends up telling him about his mother’s affair with Mr. Shears.

Explanation and Analysis:
When Mrs. Alexander realizes that Christopher believes his mother is dead and doesn’t know about her affair, she decides that she has already said too much and has to reveal the truth. This is the moment in which Christopher finds out that his mother was having an affair with Mr. Shears, an essential piece of information that leads to the unraveling of Christopher’s life as he knows it. Mrs. Alexander, a kind old lady, doesn’t feel she can say what she means outright, instead calling Judy and Mr. Shears “very good friends.” Christopher, who usually doesn’t understand implied meanings, catches Dolorem et quae.
