The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling: Book 6, Chapter 10 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Mr. Western confronts Allworthy at breakfast the next morning, saying that while he’s sure Allworthy tried to raise Tom well, Tom has made a nuisance of himself. He explains the situation with Sophia, and Allworthy is amazed to hear it. Mr. Western says he will make Sophia marry Mr. Blifil by force, if necessary, then leaves.
Mr. Western has stated his belief that he knows what Sophia needs in a marriage better than she does herself. The lengths that he is willing to go to force Sophia into a marriage show how important marriage is at this time and how strongly greed motivates Mr. Western to get ahold of Mr. Blifil’s inheritance.

Allworthy doesn’t know what to make of all this and goes to see Mr. Blifil. Blifil, who is motivated more by hatred of Tom than by love of Sophia, gets furious about the situation and accuses Tom of being manipulative. He says Tom is a danger to Allworthy’s whole family, noting how Tom supposedly attacked him and Thwackum without provocation. Allworthy calls upon Thwackum who agrees with everything Mr. Blifil says.
