The Thing About Jellyfish

Franny Jackson Character Analysis

Franny is a friend that Suzy makes when she is five years old. Although she died in a drowning accident before the events of the novel’s main timeline, she appears prominently in flashbacks. In early flashbacks, Franny and Suzy are close and have an easy relationship with each other. As they grow older, however, Franny starts feeling more pressure to fit in with other girls around her like Audrey, and she sometimes gets annoyed at Suzy for failing to fit in. This culminates in Franny spitting on Suzy’s face during a camping trip, which in turn leads to Suzy putting frozen urine in Franny’s locker, their last interaction before Franny’s death. Although Suzy feels guilt about her last moments with Franny, Franny’s mom helps Suzy to realize how in spite of everything, Franny still cared for Suzy and even admired her. Suzy didn’t want to believe that a strong swimmer like Franny could die in a drowning accident, believing instead that a jellyfish sting must have killed Franny. But as Suzy ultimately comes to accept the reality of Franny’s death, Suzy begins to grow up and to move on from her grief.

The weirdest part of the whole video came after he was out of the hospital, though. Because as soon as he felt better—like, the very instant—he got right back into the water.
