Skye was Clay’s middle-school crush. Over the course of her high school years, she’s become quieter and less involved, preferring to wear baggy clothing that makes her seem like she’s hiding. Clay finds her difficult to talk to, but Hannah’s tapes help him to see that Skye might be feeling the same way that Hannah was before she ended her life, so instead of letting Skye shut him out, Clay makes the effort to engage with her. Skye’s name is the last thing Clay says in the novel, demonstrating Clay’s commitment to learn from Hannah’s death.
